P.O on Netflix's 'Teach You A Lesson': "I Felt Relieved After Watching the Final Cut"
KPOPIT recently sat down with P.O at a quiet cafe in the scenic Samcheong-dong neighborhood of Seoul to discuss his experiences working on the high-profile show.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Hong Jong-chan, "Teach You a Lesson" chronicles the high-stakes missions of a fictional teachers' rights protection bureau that fiercely takes the side of vulnerable victims, stepping in to restore order and justice within troubled school environments. Actress Jin Ki-joo co-stars alongside P.O as Bong Geun-dae, a naturally gifted and fiercely dedicated officer leading the bureau's investigations.
The live-action series drew immense social attention long before its official premiere, primarily due to fierce ethical debates surrounding the highly controversial original webtoon source material. Select arcs of the original webtoon included graphic depictions of severe corporal punishment, physical retaliation against teenage bullies, dialogue widely deemed hostile toward women and marginalized groups, and a highly sensitive storyline revolving around a false sexual assault accusation.
Domestic and international critics raised red flags that the webtoon effectively glorified violence and risked amplifying harmful real-world stereotypes, leaving many viewers highly skeptical about how these problematic elements would be translated onto the screen.
P.O addressed those deep-seated anxieties directly, offering reassurance to the public. "The controversial parts that the general public was worried about were simply not present in the final script that I read," the actor stated firmly.
"After watching the fully edited final version myself, I genuinely thought it was at a respectable level where viewers could watch the story unfold without feeling a shred of moral discomfort," P.O added. "I truly believe that even the people who initially held strong reservations will feel that those complex issues are beautifully and thoughtfully balanced in the show, and that the ultimate narrative is incredibly convincing."
"Teach You a Lesson" is currently available for worldwide streaming exclusively on Netflix.
